quiet

Clint and Jules were out on a run.
Evee sat beside me, working on her letters.
Iris came over, climbed onto the couch, moved my hands aside, and found a place on my lap... somewhere between my stomach and the computer.
It was pointless to keep working, so I put the computer away. Held her for a moment.
She got down and I was glad I had taken the moment since it had been short.
But she came back a moment later with a book.
And we just sat, the three of us. Reading in a quiet room with a simple lamp on.
I think my breathing was a bit softer and more rhythmic.
And I'm thankful for the reality that children bring of what is important.
The night only got better and better from there.

“In returning and rest you will be saved; in quietness and in trust will be your strength." (Isaiah 30:15)

  3. when i was growing up we had no dishwasher (that's how old i am) and the second the sink was full of warm water and soapy suds, i was fiercely drawn to my mom's side - just as she submerged her hands in the sink, i inevitably would request a hug

perhaps i needed to know that i mattered more than her task at hand, whatever the cause of my interruption, she never refused the opportunity to grant my request

and with her soggy-handed embrace which lasted until i was satisfied, i knew she loved me in spite of my timing - and i loved her all the more for it...

    because it matters, jayne
